She watched suspiciously
as I opened dresser drawers
pulling out her panties
socks
shirts
and placing them
in a brand new
suitcase.

For when she came to me
Her meager belongings
were stuffed inside
a 13 gallon trash bag.

I smiled at her
Happy for this day
Happy for her
Devastated for me
my heart bled
as the flower of motherhood
that had taken root there
was ripped out
When they told me
She was going home.

She asked me
If I would still love her
When she was gone.
I smiled.
I will love you always
Poppet.

She nodded.
She understood.
Adults make everything so complicated
